Shadow & Bone – Leigh Bardugo

***Spoiler Alert***

Blurb:
Surrounded by enemies, the once-great nation of Ravka has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a swath of near impenetrable darkness crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh. Now its fate may rest on the shoulders of one lonely refugee.

Alina Starkov has never been good at anything. But when her regiment is attacked on the Fold and her best friend is brutally injured, Alina reveals a dormant power that saves his life—a power that could be the key to setting her war-ravaged country free. Wrenched from everything she knows, Alina is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling.

Yet nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. With darkness looming and an entire kingdom depending on her untamed power, Alina will have to confront the secrets of the Grisha . . . and the secrets of her heart.

My Thoughts:
I don’t know why I keep doing this to myself, I keep reading the first installment of a trilogy/duology and then have to wait either for the last installment to be released or wait until I’ve read a certain amount of books before I let myself buy more books!!!

In this book, we follow Alina. She is on the front line of the Unsea when her and her team comes under attack and suddenly she emits a blinding light. She is then rushed away to Os Alta where she is thrown into a world she doesn’t think she belongs to.

I really enjoyed this book, lets start there. I thought the pacing was pretty spot on, even though a lot happened and there weren’t as many pages as I thought there would be, I don’t feel like it was rushed.

I know that the Darkling is a bad guy but I really enjoyed him as a character, he was alluring, but there were times that I was pretty suspicious of him, just because of the way he was saying certain things.

I thought Alina’s breakthrough was really interesting because all of her emotions are tied up with Mal, and I thought that was a really beautiful detail.

There were times when I wish this could have been an adult book, just to give us more details in certain parts but it is a really great YA.

I thought the ending was pretty good, but it almost felt like the closing of a chapter like the end of the story, which confused me a bit because I had to keep reminding myself that there were more books, but overall I really enjoyed the book.
