Blurb:
When a hidden prince, a girl with secrets, a ragtag group of unlikely heroes, and a legendary firebird come together…something wicked is going down. From the highly acclaimed author of The Bone Witch trilogy comes this enchanting new YA fairytale.
Many years ago, the magical Kingdom of Avalon was left encased in ice when the Snow Queen waged war. Its former citizens are now refugees in a world mostly devoid of magic. Which is why the crown prince and his protectors are stuck in…Arizona.
Prince Alexei, the sole survivor of the Avalon royal family, is hiding in a town so boring, magic doesn’t even work there. Few know his secret identity, but his friend Tala is one of them.
A new hope for their abandoned homeland reignites when a famous creature of legend, the Firebird, appears for the first time in decades. Alex and Tala must unite with a ragtag group of new friends to journey back to Avalon for a showdown that will change the world as they know it.
My Thoughts:
I really enjoyed this book because it was an interesting take on the magic world and, what I had trouble with was following the magic, and I suspect that this is because we are following Tala who doesn’t know much about the magical world.
I did find other bits quite hard to follow because it seemed to jump around a bit and it seemed that some people were in certain places when in fact they weren’t there at all.

One of my favourite things about the book was seeing how Tala’s agimat grew from the beginning of the book to the end and her not realising quite how strong she is.
I also really enjoyed the subtle references to fairy tales in the book which I feel gave the book a bit more depth.
I do think that the book could easily have had another hundred pages though to explain things a bit better, but I will definitely be picking up more books by Rin Chupeco.

I like that this was a balanced review – equally listing what you liked and didn’t like about Wicked as You Wish. I haven’t read it, but I’m adding it to my TBR list now!

This sounds like such a pretty book, despite the title, and I love books that are built off or include little hints at fairytales! I have read the Bone Witch Trilogy, so must peek into these enthralling pages. 🙂

I haven’t heard of this book before & I’m not the biggest fan of fantasy, but this book does seem interesting! I also don’t like that it was a bit hard to follow at times.

Thanks for your review of this book! I enjoy fantasy and sci fi . The premise sounds intriguing, though I’m not sure I’ll want to struggle with the magical rules.

The premise of the story sounds like a great idea and I love books that dive into a magical world. I don’t especially love when things jump around either because it becomes easy to lose focus and engagement. I personally love details, as it makes the tale come to life. Sounds like you still enjoyed it though!

I’m more of a mood reader, I don’t think I have a particular favourite just depends on what I’m in the mood for to be honest.
What about you?

Ah yes, fair enough. I like philosophy and history books. When I was younger I read a lot of fiction, mainly historical fiction and classics.
